ALLIES

Young people from First Out youth group, based at Leicester Lesbian, Gay and Bisexual Centre and NCBI (National Coalition Building Institute) created a set of four postcards focusing on racism and homophobia.

The cards were designed to be used in schools and with youth groups and were distributed free to all secondary schools and community colleges in the city and county. Taking part was a positive experience for the participants, all of whom had experienced prejudice themselves. The project also allowed the young people to learn new practical skills: "I learnt written and verbal communication skills and how to express ideas clearly and effectively. And I learnt camera skills!"

The project was funded by a grant from Stonewall via their Citizenship 21 fund which enabled groups of people who suffer prejudice to work together.

YOUNG DADS

We worked with young fathers in Leicester to make a film and booklet designed to raise awareness of young men’s involvement in parenting. All the participants were young dads themselves.

The young men’s pride in their children and the pleasure and fulfillment they get from their role is evident throughout. There is clearly given information and advice for other young parents and messages for health and welfare providers. The film portrays some of the challenges facing young fathers yet it is not all about problems, pain and prejudice. It is a useful resource for teachers, youth and community workers, and health practitioners.

"This film shows we are not living up to social stereotypes: we are not a waste of space. We are not just weekend dads or single parents. We don’t pick the best bits: we are involved in it all"!

The project was funded by Sure Start and Home Start
