What is MASH-UP in New Parks?

In response to discussions with local community workers, residents and young people in New Parks, Soft Touch Arts have set up a programme which will target young people who have nothing to do on Friday and Saturday nights.

The programme, called MASH-UP, has now started and will run for at least  18 months, and will allow young people to take part in a wide range of creative activities such as:

  • making and performing music
  • graffiti art panels
  • designing and making t-shirts and
  • clothes
  • dance and drama
  • putting on events and showcases
  • film making
  • DJing with Basketball
  • and lots more.

MASH-UP is currently taking place on Fridays at the Allexton Centre on Frolesworth Road from 7.30-9.30pm.

On Saturday evenings there are outdoor events taking place across the estate, which will take activities to where young people hang around. This will also help MASH-UP project workers to get  to know the young people, and to find out what they are interested in doing.

There are also sessions running on Friday evenings at the Soft Touch building, where young people can take part in anything creative in a safe and welcoming environment, with experienced staff will help them to develop their ideas and introduce them to other young people who have similar interests.

If you know any young people aged 13-19 who are interested in music, art, fashion, dance or would like to try something new, please encourage them to join the MASH-UP sessions at Allexton, or look out for flyers, posters, Facebook and Twitter messages which will advertise forthcoming street events.

Please also be sure to get in contact with Kieran Walsh, the MASH-UP Contact Worker  on 07540277006 or email him at Kieran@soft-touch.org.uk.

Kieran will be helping to develop the programme by working in New Parks on an outreach/detached work basis and will be supporting young people as well as building links between the Programme and existing services for local young people.
