YES project aims to change lives of young people
Soft Touch Arts is one of eight partners working with Voluntary Action LeicesterShire (VAL) on a new £1.94m project that will support some of Leicester and Leicestershire’s most at risk young people.
The project, called the Youth Employability Support (YES) project, will aim to transform the futures of 400 young people between the ages of 15 and 24 who are currently the furthest from being able to move into employment.
YES will focus on young people who face extra barriers to work, such as mental or physical health difficulties, homelessness, disabilities or being a carer, but it will also be open to any young person in Leicester or Leicestershire who is not in employment, education or training.
Soft Touch is offering a weekly creative session where young people have the opportunity to try out photography, Photoshop, stencil and graffiti art, print, music, sculpture, creative cooking and more. The sessions help participants build confidence and learn new skills. There will also be:
- A personal development plan
- One-to-one support
- The opportunity to work towards an accredited Arts Award and to progress onto our mentoring scheme
An annual YES exhibition will offer the chance for participants to showcase their art and receive recognition for all their hard word by visitors, mentors and creative organisations.
Participants will have the opportunity to access a range of support from all 8 partner organisations.
The YES project is funded by the Big Lottery Fund and the European Social Fund.
To find out about joining the project email Jim Jackson – firstname.lastname@example.org
Do you know a young person from New Parks, Beaumont Leys, Stocking Farm or Mowmacre Hill aged 10-25 who:
- Enjoys making arts and/or music?
- Wants to increase their confidence?
- Wants to meet new like-minded people?
- Needs support achieving their goals?
- Is unsure of their next step?
- Needs a focus?
- Would like time for themselves or someone to talk to?
UPSTART MAY JUST BE THE ANSWER
UpSTart uses fun creative activities to engage young people from New Parks, Beaumont Leys, Stocking Farm and Mowmacre Hill who need support. It provides focused arts and personal development options that will help with young people’s motivation, self-confidence and communication skills, leading onto tailored support to move on and achieve their goals in life.
Stage 1 – ENGAGE – free blocks of creative activities sessions run in schools, youth clubs, community venues and on the street.
Stage 2 – DEVELOP -Structured programmes of activity and support run from the Soft Touch premises on New Walk, including the chance to gain Arts Award accreditation, to have a mentor, to work towards having exhibitions and performances, to volunteer and have work experience.
Stage 3 – PROGRESS – tailored one-to-one support allowing participants to move on and achieve their goals in life – from personal relationships to employment or education.
Individual young people can be referred to the programme at any stage.
Every school holiday we run a Creative Day Out at Soft Touch Arts. This gives young people involved in stage 1 or individuals thinking about joining stage 2 the chance to come to Soft Touch and enjoy a day of creative fun. They will get the opportunity to meet the staff, find out where we are and have a taste of what goes on at stage 2. Parents / support workers welcome to come along too. Details of the next Creative Day out can be found here
We can also run Creative Days Out for specific schools or other groups in the area. If you want to find out more contact email@example.com
“This place [Soft Touch Arts] is amazing, why wouldn’t you want to come back?” – Creative Day Out participant aged 15
