Cafe & Cooking Project

Our weekly lunchtime cafe (Wed/Thur/Fri - 11-2.30) is a great place to meet with friends and colleagues and support a project which helps young people develop cooking and catering skills.

Not got time to stop? That’s fine, we provide takeaways and free local deliveries in the New Walk area too.  Just give us a call on 0116 2552592! or join our Cafe Mailing List here:

See a sample menu here.    Our menu changes each month.   Head across to our Twitter & Facebook pages to check out our weekly specials and the menu of the day.

Every Wednesday morning during term time, students from Ellesmere College run a lunchtime pop-up cafe 11.30-2.20pm.  Every Thursday 11.30-2.30pm the Soft Touch kitchen and exhibition area is transformed into a creative café, with young participants and regular volunteers preparing delicious freshly cooked hot and cold meals, sandwiches, soup and cakes under the guidance of our professional chef.  We’ve got a 5* food hygiene rating and you get excellent quality food at great value prices.   We’re also helping to reduce food waste through our partnership with Sainsbury’s on Humberstone Gate – they donate fresh fruit and veg that has not been properly packaged which would otherwise go to landfill.  In 2020 we added a further day of cooking for young people and we now have students from Bosworth College helping to run a Friday lunchtime (11-2.30pm) cafe.   Whilst Covid measures are in place we are only doing take-away meals and offering food for free for those in the community that need it.

The aim of our cooking and catering work is to give young people and volunteers from a variety of backgrounds experience in catering.  They get to learn different catering and customer service skills in a real café environment, which helps boost their confidence, provides an opportunity to meet new people and to gain skills for future employment.

Keep an eye out on Facebook (softtoucharts) and Twitter (@softtoucharts) for weekly menu updates.  Some weeks you might see a music performance, exhibition or mini-festival taking place and during the school holidays we run family arts activities too.

On sunny days, eat, drink and relax in our courtyard garden leading from New Walk, opposite Museum Square.

Every penny that you spend on your food and drink goes back into running the café to continue giving cooking and catering skills to disadvantaged and vulnerable young people. What’s not to like?!

We also provide:

  • Free WiFi
  • Disabled access
  • Accessible changing area including hoist with changing bench
  • Baby changing facilities

Everyone welcome – 11.30-2.30 every Wednesday,  Thursday and Friday at 50 New Walk, Leicester LE1 6TF.  For pre-orders call 0116 2552592
